- Acute Medical Setting - Peer Support for Newly Qualified Occupational TherapistsIn Conditions + Specialisms15 October 2018@Jamie Grant I do think the fast-paced nature of the acute setting means it will take longer to transition. I learn by doing things in a logical order, in my own time, without distraction and then I'm able to speed up which isn't really possible. I'm just wondering if anyone has got any tips about managing the transition or building skills in this setting? I have a rule with my husband (he works in the same hospital) that we chat about work in the car on the way back and then that's it. Once the uniform is off, it's time-out. I do the odd bit of research on days off, but I'm really trying to make sure I don't burn out. I've spent time with teams in the community to gain an understanding about their referral criteria. I've found the preceptorship programme really helpful in having focused objectives to achieve. In terms of building skills, my issue is that I overthink/try to solve all problems.. even when there isn't necessarily one. I need to try and focus on what someone needs to help them back to how they were prior to their hospital admission and then signpost/refer to community for further support, if needed. The advice I was given was to focus on the reason for admission, what they're being treated for, what the medical plan is, what is their 'normal' functioning' and how are they on the ward. If anyone else has any tips, I'd be very grateful!2
- Acute Medical Setting - Peer Support for Newly Qualified Occupational TherapistsIn Conditions + Specialisms12 October 2018I suppose you could say that part of our role is assessing and supporting people to be independent or as close to baseline as possible in their functioning in order for to participate in their activities of daily living. I know that’s one aspect of my role in acute mental health2
- Acute Medical Setting - Peer Support for Newly Qualified Occupational TherapistsIn Conditions + Specialisms15 October 2018Thank you so much for starting this forum! I am a newly qualified and am in my sixth week of working in an acute hospital setting. I actually did a couple of acute hospital placements as a student however have still really struggled with the transition to newly qualified. I think partly I feel an overwhelming sense of responsibility and partly I have had to come to terms with having unrealistic expectations of myself. Anyone else feeling overwhelmed with medical jargon? I think one of the best resources so far has definitely been having weekly supervision - although this has been hard some weeks due to the busy workload. And ongoing training, although this too can sometimes be overwhelming because I still don't feel like I've got to grips with 'the basics'...10
- Acute Medical Setting - Peer Support for Newly Qualified Occupational TherapistsIn Conditions + Specialisms12 October 2018I started this concept on twitter where a question was raised .. How do you, in an acute medical setting, explain the OT role to patients (& MDT)? I feel I could do more to promote the #ValueofOT. However, it’s tricky when the goal is discharge/downstream ward. It’s more hospital-dihospital-directed rected than person-centred.10
- Acute Medical Setting - Peer Support for Newly Qualified Occupational TherapistsIn Conditions + Specialisms15 October 2018Thank you,@louise_crisp! I find myself saying something along the lines of 'my job is to understand how you were managing at home before your hospital admission, to see how you are now and if there's any further support we could offer to ensure you're independent and safe at home'... which I definitely need to re-think! What about... 'my role is to assess activities of daily living (and maybe give a couple of examples). Would you mind if I asked a few questions about your home environment and how you normally manage with your day to day activities?.... Then it would be useful to see how you are in hospital and if there's anything we need to do to increase your independence and safety at home... Any feedback would be much appreciated. I'm very keen to promote the value of OT, especially as I was called a physio multiple times over the weekend!1
